Un terroir rural qui a réinventé l'art baroque et accueilli l'épopée des stations de ski
Les qualités exceptionnelles de son terroir ont favorisé, au fil des époques, la constitution d’un patrimoine sans égal. Ses innombrables villages reflètent encore aujourd’hui une civilisation rurale qui, à son apogée, découvrit l’art baroque.
De la vallée des Allues au col de l’Iseran, en passant par le vallon de Champagny-en-Vanoise ou le Versant du soleil au-dessus d’Aime, ancienne capitale d’une province romaine, l’architecture civile en Tarentaise témoigne d’une réelle opulence tirée non seulement d’une nature généreuse mais également d’une organisation foncière et économique bien spécifique.
Quant à l’architecture religieuse, à l’exception de la basilique romane d’Aime et de quelques églises néoclassiques, c’est l’art baroque qui y règne en maître à travers l’œuvre de grands sculpteurs transalpins, la plupart du temps valsesians.
Cultiver le patrimoine, réinventer l'avenir
Loin de s’endormir sur ce passé, la Tarentaise a su, très tôt, prendre le virage industriel avec l’exploitation d’autres richesses naturelles : le minerai, la houille blanche puis l’or blanc.
Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale naissent en altitude certaines des plus célèbres stations de sports d’hiver qui vont profondément transformer les paysages bâtis. Courchevel, Val d’Isère, Les Arcs, La Plagne et tant d’autres nous rappellent l’esprit d’une époque innovante, résolument tournée vers la modernité.
