Proche de la Tarentaise, du Briançonnais et de l’Italie, la Maurienne est une voie de passage privilégiée dans le franchissement des Alpes.
Du fort d’Aiton au Mont Iseran, son histoire est représentative de celle des hautes vallées. Berceau de la Maison de Savoie et de la construction d’un État souverain, elle est jalonnée de sites médiévaux et de forts des époques moderne et contemporaine. Aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, églises et chapelles sont dotées d’un mobilier baroque souvent réalisé par des sculpteurs locaux.
Une montagne accueillante
Son visage actuel résulte de l’héritage des nombreuses activités qui se sont développées dans la vallée (hydro-électricité, usines chimiques et métallurgiques). En altitude, tourisme et agriculture s’associent pour dessiner une montagne accueillante.
