Fort Saint-Gobain is a fortified work of the Maginot line of the Alps, from the 1939-45 war.
Its main mission was to block access to the Maurienne valley via the Col du Mont-Cenis road and the railroad line, upstream of Modane.
After crossing the men's and equipment entrance via the drawbridge, visitors are taken through the galleries to discover the barracks and technical rooms, which enabled a crew of 150 soldiers to live in self-sufficiency for three months in case of need. The combat blocks are also accessible to discover their own technical installations and armaments.
Self-guided tours follow a signposted route, with explanatory panels in 3 languages (French, Italian and English). The temperature inside the fort is around 12°C, so warm clothing is essential.
Visitors can also discover the outside, by following a signposted path that leads to the top of the fort, offering an unobstructed view of the valley.
The fort has been fully restored by members of the Musée de la Traversée des Alpes (MTA) association.
