Let us tell you about the thousand-year-old history of Tignes, from the peddler to the skier, from the mountain pastures to the villages.
The church of Saint Jacques, rebuilt exactly as it was when the dam was built, will give you an insight into the village's rich history.
Discover how the small village of Tignes became an internationally renowned winter sports resort.
All that remains of the old village of Tignes, drowned by the waters of the dam in 1952, is the church, rebuilt as it was in the 17th and 18th centuries, reflecting Alpine Baroque art.
By the 1920s, the village of Tignes was already welcoming skiers "en spatules", and before the war there were ten hotels in operation. By 1936, the Tourist Office was up and running, and the first ski lift was in operation.
The resort of Tignes-le-Lac was created in 1956. The first residences were built by architect Raymond Pantz.
In the 1970s, promoter Pierre Schnebelen designed the Val Claret resort and imagined a "ski-in, ski-out" resort.
