Descriptif détaillé

According to local legend, the name Saint-Martin derives from the name of the saint who passed through the village en route to Italy; the holy man would have travelled through Maurienne as far as the village before crossing the col des Encontres mountain pass and travelling down to Tarentaise via Saint-Martin-de-Belleville. He became the patron saint of the village and appears in several images in the church, either in his Bishop's robes or dressed as a Roman legionnaire.
The inside of the church features an array of decorative elements:19th century murals, previously covered with decorative elements from the 1930s, and then restored in the late 20th century; a 17th century Rosary altarpiece, also restored in the 19th century and statues from the old rood beam, now displayed on the main altarpiece etc. Step inside for a journey through time and a chance to admire the expertise and handiwork of generations of artists!
